DOBHAR-CHU
(AKA: Dobarcu, Dorraghower, Dhuragoo, King Otter, Irish Crocodile)

The Dobhar-chú is a creature of Irish folklore. Dobhar-chú is roughly translated into "water hound." It resembles both a dog and an otter though sometimes is described as a half dog, half fish.
A headstone, found in Conwall cemetery in Glenade, Co. Leitrim depicts the Dobhar-chú and is related to a tale of an attack on a local woman by the creature. The stone is claimed to be the headstone of a grave of a woman killed by the Dobhar-chú in the 17th century. Her name was supposedly Gráinne. Her husband supposedly heard her scream as she was washing clothes down at Glenade lough, Co. Leitrim and came to her aid. When he got there she was already dead, with the Dobhar-chú upon her bloody and mutilated body. The man killed the Dobhar-chú, stabbing it in the heart. As it died, it made a whistling noise, and its mate arose from the lough. Its mate chased the man but, after a long and bloody battle, he killed it as well.

Amazon's giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) can actually reach this size. ;) Well maybe not quite 7 feet at least these days but 6 feet.

Is this a species of otter or otter-like carnivoran mammal (mustlid, feline, mongoose, etc)? I'm just guessing.

Otters are carnivores, so an otter this size would be dangerous.

it looks cute thought. but then again i had a otter almost bite my finger off one time. i agree with the otter being that size is dangerous i wouldn't kill it thought i would wait to see if it would strike first or go away.

You know, I bet the Dobhar could have been real, otters are ferocious little bastards, one that size could kill a woman by surprise I think. Maybe three hundred years ago there were animals this size, or maybe they were just a freak of nature.

Well it's possible, after all otters are quite vicious and it's possible that the Dobhar chu was a giant subspecies or just a freak specimen.
