Description

BLACK PANTHER

There are no authenticated cases of truly melanistic cougars. Melanistic cougars have never been photographed or shot in the wild and none has ever been bred. There is wide consensus among breeders and biologists that such an animal does not exist. But since colonial times, people have reported sightings of "black panthers" in North America.
There has been much discussion as to what these panthers could be, with theories ranging from regular cougars observed under poor light conditions, to an undiscovered surviving population of the American Lion (Panthera atrox).
